The St. Louis Cardinals truly are one of the model franchises in Major League Baseball, and likely all of American sports. Established way back in 1882, the franchise began a culture of winning very early on, winning the third ever World Series in 1886. The Cards would build a tremendous roster in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s, built around Dizzy Dean, Frankie Frisch and Rogers Hornsby, all future Hall of Famers. The team would take the World Series in 1926, and then again in 1931. The Johnny Mize/Stan Musial era would come in the early 1940’s, and the Cardinals would once again nab a few World Series titles — In 1942, 1944 & again in 1946. The 1960’s would arrive, and Bob Gibson and Orlando Cepeda would lead the team to titles in 1964 & 1967. Bob Gibson would be so good towards the end of the 1960’s in fact that he would be the main culprit of a league-wide lowering of the mound due to pitching becoming too effective. In 1982 the Cardinals would again rise up to win a title, this time over the Milwaukee Brewers. Defense was the name of the Cardinals game this time, led by The Wizard of Oz himself, Ozzie Smith. A light 1990’s burst of fame due to Mark McGwire’s chase of Roger Maris’s HR record aside, the Cardinals didn’t take their modern day form until the turn of the century. Largely due to being one of the earliest adopters of advanced analytics, the Cardinals turned into one of the most reliable teams in all of sports. From 2000-2020 St. Louis would reach the NLCS almost half the time (9/20), reach the World Series four times and win it twice (2006 & 2011). Albert Pujols would become one of the greatest players in baseball history during his time in St. Louis, but the Cardinals really made a name for building depth year-in and year-out. As the 2020’s now roll forward, the Cards’ edge has shrunk, but they remain a winning team every single season, and one that fans can rely on.
