Northwestern Wildcats Football "Modern Iconography" Statistical Poster
Sports art doesn’t need to be in-your-face. It can be elegant, stylish, even thought-provoking. These large-scale modern-style prints can certainly fit in a garage or man cave, but they’re most at home in a dining or living room adorned by thoughtful interior design. Created using visual iconography and showcasing historical and statistical data (updated for the 2024 season), these posters tell an elaborate story of the legacy of Northwestern football in a design-forward manner and will undoubtedly enhance any space you choose to display it in.
Northwestern is perhaps the most prestigious university in all of Division I college athletics. While the history of success on the field has never (and may never) mirror the success of those in the classroom, the Wildcats have created a name for themselves throughout a lengthy history. The team would begin play all the way back in 1892, and would build up to 10-1-3 season in 1903 behind head coach Walter McCornack, in what would prove to be one of the first truly great seasons of college football in the entire history of the sport. Throughout the 1930s, 40s and 50s the team would pop up on the AP Top 25 ranks fairly regularly, as head coaches Dick Hanley, Pappy Waldorf & Robert Voigts would lead their respective clubs towards success year over year. A lengthy fallow period would come for the team in the second half of the 1900’s, but near the turn of the century the Wildcats would return to prominence behind Gary Barnett and Randy Walker, eventually Pat Fitzgerald in 2006. Fitzgerald especially would lead the program to an entirely new level of success , reaching 10 wins in three separate seasons between 2012-2017. For the Alabamas and USCs of the world, this is not something to celebrate, but with the extreme academic standards of a school such as Northwestern, to compete on the field in this way is nothing short of a tremendous job. Student-Athletes at Northwestern around this time would also attempt to push the NCAA on right-to-work standards and practices, ultimately preceding what would eventually happen with NIL rules in the 2020’s. All in all the Northwestern program is one of great on-the-field successes, but what they may ultimately go down in history for is how important they’ve been to the game of college football overall.
