The New York Knicks were born in the 1946-47 season, and have become one of the most famous franchises in all of sports while also becoming synonymous with dysfunction and poor management for large stretches of their history. The early years of the franchise would be dominated by Harry Gallatin, an undersized but strong center who known for his rebounding. The team would play in ten straight playoffs to start of the history of the team, largely with Gallatin on board, and would set course for expectations for them moving forward. The 1960’s and early 1970’s would see the Knicks build a truly great team. Willias Reed, Earl Monroe, Jerry Lucas, Phil Jackson, Walt Frazier, Bill Bradley and Dav DeBusschere would combine to create one of the most hard-nosed but skilled basketball teams that history had yet seen. The team would reach the postseason nine straight seasons from 1966-67 to 1974-75, reach three NBA FInals and win two of them. The 1969-70 NBA Finals especially lives in the lore of basketball fans, as Willis Reed was injured going into Game 7, and miraculously suited up and played a short stint to start the game. He would score four points before leaving the game, but it was the hype up that the Knicks needed to win that game and the series. The 1990’s Knicks would see Patrick Ewing, Anthony Mason, Charles Oakley and John Starks completely bully the rest of the league, creating a new space for defensive basketball focused on physicality. They would suffer a similar fate to many in the time of Jordan, as they would fail to win a title, but would play in the playoffs in an impressive 14 straight seasons, reaching the Finals twice. The 2000’s have been largely a wasteland for the Knicks, as disappointments would build on top of each other. Bad teams, bad ownership, injuries, bad trades, and missed opportunities would be the norm for New York this century. In the early 2020’s, however, the team landed Jalen Brunson, who has become a revelation as a player. Along with Julius Randle, the Knicks seem to have at least begun to turn the corner, and look to be pretty competitive and one or two moves away from being true contenders.
