The San Francisco 49ers are on the short list of NFL royalty historically. In fact, if you choose to do so, you can zoom all the way out and possibly view them as the king of the entirety of the league since it’s inception. Simply listing names of the team’s history is like a ‘whos who’ game of the greatest players to ever step foot on a football field. Rice. Montana. Young. Lott. TO. Clark. Established in 1944 in the old AAFC, the Niners began their tenure in the sport unassumingly — bouncing between bad and mediocre for almost 25 years, but in the early 70’s, on the back of John Brodie the team would see it’s first real success, putting together quality seasons of 10, 9, and 8 wins. Though they’d fall short in the playoffs each season, the culture of winning in San Francisco was being forged. The 1979 season would see the scarlet and gold bring in a new, forward-thinking head coach by the name of Bill Walsh, and he would re-invent the game entirely using a new type of play-calling centered around short, quick passing plays and a pace of play that kept the defense on their heels for the entirety of play - The West Coast Offense. The marriage of Walsh with signal caller Joe Montana would prove to be dynastic, as the Niners would win three titles in the 1980’s, becoming the unquestioned best team of that decade. Another title would come in 1994, with West Coast proteges George Seifert at HC and Steve Young at QB, but the result was the same as the great teams of the 80’s. The 2000’s would arrive and San Francisco would build consistent contenders, but not until the arrival of Kyle Shanahan in 2017 did it suddenly seem like the Bay was back to the level that they always felt destined for. With Shanahan’s offensive prowess and a dynastic DNA, the Niners look to be a team worth talking about for years to come.
