The Los Angeles Lakers are likely the most storied franchise in the history of American sports, and are certainly the most impressive in the history of the NBA. Established in 1948-49, the (then Minneapolis) Lakers would instantly get to winning with legendary center George Mikan. Mikan would lead the team to five titles in his eight year career, and would set on path a culture of winning unlike one we’ve ever seen for a single franchise since. The late 1950’s would see the team add superstars Elgin Baylor and Jerry West, and in what would end up as the longest championship drought for the Lakers, the team would constantly be stonewalled by the Bill Russell Celtics. From 1958-59 to 1970-71, the Lakers would make the semifinals or finals of the playoffs 11 times, and were never able to come out on top. The team would bring in the greatest talent in NBA history at the time, Wilt Chamberlain, and in 1971-72 they would finally climb the mountain again, winning the NBA Finals for the first time in almost 20 years. The mid 1970s would see the team bring in the next great big-man of his era, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Kareem would elevate the franchise to greatness again, as they would win the 1979-80 NBA Finals on his back. The team didn’t become transcendent again, however, until they would draft Magic Johnson that same year. Magic, Kareem and James Worthy would partly own the 1980’s, winning five titles and really moving the entertainment value of the league forward, battling with the Bird Celtics during the time. The turn of the century would see the team acquire Shaquille O’Neal and a young Kobe Bryant, and together they would win back-to-back-to-back titles from 1999-00 to 2001-02. Those teams are argued to this day as the greatest of all time, two transcendent superstars at the exact perfect time of their careers — O’Neal especially. Kobe’s time would come to lead the team, and in 2008-09 the team had added Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom to Kobe’s orbit, and the trio would win back-to-back titles. In 2018-19 LeBron James would come to town, and quickly push the team to acquire Anthony Davis. The Lakers would win yet another title in 2019-20, in the Bubble, defining yet another era for the most decorated team in the history of the league. Who knows what the next chapter is for the Lakers, but it’s clear that it will have high heights and will likely end with confetti.
