Boston Celtics "Modern Iconography" Statistical Poster
Sports art doesn’t need to be in-your-face. It can be elegant, stylish, even thought-provoking. These large-scale modern-style prints can certainly fit in a garage or man cave, but they’re most at home in a dining or living room adorned by thoughtful interior design. Created using visual iconography and showcasing historical and statistical data (updated for the 2024 season), these posters tell an elaborate story of the legacy of the C’s in a design-forward manner and will undoubtedly enhance any space you choose to display it in.
The Boston Celtics are one of the very small handful of greatest franchises in American sports history. Established in 1946-47, the Celtics would take less than a decade to go from expansion team to true dynasty. In 1956-57 the team would draft Bill Russell out of San Francisco, and over the course of the next thirteen seasons the Celtics would win the title in eleven of them. Bill Russell was a Black Swan Event in the NBA in a way that has probably only been seen with Babe Ruth — A player so overwhelmingly better than the rest of the league that there was no stopping him. Those Celtics of the 60’s and early 70’s were not only Russell — Bob Cousey, John Havlicek, K.C. and Sam Jones would all play significant roles on the team… But this was Russell’s team. Bill Russell would ultimately bring the game into a different era, one where athleticism and size would be prioritized, but for the time that he was in Boston they would rule the roost. The mid-1970’s would see Havlicek join forces with Dave Cowens, and the Celtics would win two more titles, one in 1973-74 and another in 1975-76. The team would draft Larry Bird in 1979-80 and the Celtics would once again be part of the upper crust of NBA teams for the decade, winning three titles from 1980-81 to 1985-86. Bird would form perhaps the most significant player rivalry in the history of American sports, with Magic Johnson, and their battles would be pointed to as the biggest reason for the NBA surviving as a league, and flourishing in the future. In 2007-08 the Celtics made two massive trades to bring Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen into the fold, and along with incumbent Paul Pierce, they would kick off the Big Three era, revolutionizing how talent would and could be dispersed on a team. Boston would win the NBA Finals that season, though many think they should have won at least one more with that combo of talent. The 2020’s would begin with Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown at the helm, and in 2024 they would bring Boston yet another title. Is the best yet to come? Time will tell.
